One of South Africa’s foremost avocado growers branches out into coffee

While some areas of South Africa feature the ideal conditions for growing coffee, only a few farmers are planting the crop, as it is highly labor-intensive. Zander Ernst of Allesbeste Boerdery is one of a handful of farmers who want to change the perception of coffee production in South Africa.

The Ernst family, owners of Allesbeste Boerdery in Tzaneen, Limpopo, are well-known as leaders in South Africa’s avocado industry. The business is managed jointly by Dr André Ernst, his wife Liezel, and their sons Zander and Edrean. In 2016, in keeping with the family’s pioneering spirit, Zander Ernst decided to diversify their operation by adding coffee production.

In 2016, Zander Ernst of Allesbeste Boerdery made the decision to branch out into coffee production.

The family decided to plant coffee only in places where it would not compete with avocados, Allesbeste’s main crop, and where they were unable to establish other subtropical fruit crops.
