Better sizes for new Polish apple harvest

The Polish apple harvest should bring more of the sizes that are in demand by the foreign markets, says one Polish exporter. The orchards connected to this company have been spared from bad weather conditions, resulting in both a larger harvest as well as better colors for the apples.

According to Mateusz Wajnert, head of sales for Polish apple exporter Galster, the new apple season should bring larger volumes and more suited sizes for the market: “We’re very optimistic when it comes to the new crop, both in terms of volumes as well as its quality. We should have more quantities available than we did last season, but the quality is even more important. This upcoming season we should be more comfortable when it comes to the sizes of the apples that are destined to be exported. Most of the markets prefer sizes between 65-85 and what we can see in our orchards is that we will definitely have more of these sizes available then we did in the previous season.”

Although some Polish exporters have seen their orchards get hit by weather conditions, the growers that Galster is connected with have been spared the inconvenience, leading to better colors on the apples: “The weather conditions in Poland have been beneficial for the color of the apples. It’s important to note that we’ve been very lucky this year, as bad weather situations like hail or heavy windstorms still haven’t affected our orchards and those of our connected growers. That said, priorities don`t change for us. The most important for us is stabilization, rather than expanding in acreage. Stability can only be achieved by taking good care of our customers, with whom we have been working for many seasons. We need to strengthen our relationships and meet their expectations for their purchased apples.”

“The other side of the coin, needed to stabilize our business, is the growers. We have group of very ambitious people and we need to take care of them as well in order to get good apples for our customers, and only then the circle closes. Why is stabilization so important for us? Only when we have calm heads, can we focus on new challenges like new markets, better production and many other ideas,” Wajnert explains.

When asked about beating the competition, Wajnert states Galster is solely focused on its own production: “I never look at others in terms of competition. We just do our job, without looking at others. We believe that taking this path is the right one, but get back to me in about two or three years for a definitive answer on that one. When looking at competitors, in our mind, it’s not about other apple producers but rather expensive freight rates and the general situation in the world because of Covid. This is what we’re up against, not other exporters.”
