“Expecting lower production for Turkish grapes and figs”

A Polish importer of Turkish fresh produce is getting ready to combine the fig and grape season in the upcoming month. Both products have seen a slight drop in production due to the weather, but the company isn’t expecting significant problems in terms of availability. The focus for the season will be on reaching European supermarkets.

According to Yuksel Zengin, managing director of Polish fruit trader Fresh Point the production of seedless Sultana grapes took a dip this season: “The Sultana grapes might have a more difficult year this season, as we predict to see somewhat of a shortage when it comes to production. The quality of the grapes is fine and we did start loading the Sultana grapes two weeks ago. This means we’re ready to deliver the grapes to any location in Europe.”

The Bursa fig season is also coming up and like the grapes, the figs will see lower volumes this year, Zengin says. “When it comes to figs, the winter conditions the figs had to endure caused production to be reasonably less than it was last year as well. As with the grapes, the quality wasn’t affected, just the production volumes. However, we still will be able to load figs daily on a full truck basis for the entire season. We expect to start exporting the Bursa region black figs within a couple of days. Our main clients and targets are supermarket chains in Europe.”

The season for the Bursa black figs should start in a couple of days, but Fresh Point might decide to hold off on starting the season a little longer: “We have been working with some of most leading supermarket chains in Poland. We have huge possibilities with seedless Sultana grapes. We’ve done production under our Agri Engineers team control and the produce suitable for the EU markets’ pesticide limits. Mayer export is announced to start from 20th of August, which is a bit early compared to previous seasons. We want to see the sizes and first harvests in our packhouse, after which we will decide to start right away or to wait a bit more.” Zengin concludes.
