Apples are changing the Chilean agroindustry business model

One of the pioneering companies involved in innovation and confronting the paradigm shift in the fruit industry is the Chilean company Copefrut, with more than 65 years of experience in the production and exportation of traditional fresh and organic fruit.

“As part of the strategic objectives of our company and with the idea of remaining at the forefront of innovation and technology in the industry, in 2014 we promoted the Organic Program in order to convert traditional apple orchards to organic orchards, as we consider organic fruit production to be a healthy and safe alternative from an environmental, socio-cultural and economic perspective,” said Felipe Casanova, Commercial Manager of Copefrut.

The company currently produces organic blueberries, cherries and apples, which have European, Chilean, Brazilian and U.S. certifications.

An additional critical step was to obtain the CarbonNeutral® certification, which is used by more than 300 companies in 30 countries.

This is how Copefrut decided to measure its carbon footprint in the production chain of organic apples, an action that allowed them to evaluate the CO2 emissions from fruit delivery to the United States and Europe for twelve months.

Through this, the carbon footprint of the transportation of 6,060 tons of organic apples was offset through three critical projects. The equivalent of 1,378 tons of CO2 that was created in the transportation of apples amounts to the full charging of more than 175 million cell phones, the daily use of almost 300 vehicles per year or the annual energy use of 160 homes.
