Supplies of Brussels sprouts out of Mexico are strong.
“We have promotional volume on both organic and conventional Brussels sprouts. We have triple the amount of surface planted for this season on organic and doubled the conventional plantings,” says Jorge Bastidas, commodity manager at Alpine Fresh based in Doral, FL.
Currently supplies are coming from Sonora, Mexico and from a quality perspective, Bastidas says Mexican quality has been great this year.
Meanwhile demand is good on Brussels sprouts. “We’re seeing a great response on the retail side. We’ve made a push on organic programs and consumers seem to be reacting positively to the Hippie Organics brand,” says Bastidas.

New pack sizes
He adds that customers are increasingly looking for value-added Brussels sprouts products as well which has Alpine focusing on creative packaging options that are appealing to customers. “This year we’ve added many presentations to the organic category,” says Bastidas, noting this includes 1 lb. mesh and 1 lb. plastic bag options. “On conventional, we’ve added smaller pack sizes that have performed well with home delivery services.”
As for prices, Bastidas says they are firming up as Californian production of Brussels sprouts winds down.
