The sales of Polish apples are at a high level at the moment. Demand is high in several European countries, like Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium. Prices have increased slightly over the past month, as was expected. However, thanks to growers opening up their cold chambers, one Polish exporter is convinced they’ll be able to supply good quality apples until the end of the season.
As there are some shortages of apples in several European countries, space has been created for Polish apples to be exported to these territories. According to Jakub Krawczyk, export manager for Appolonia: “Since we last spoke the sales of apples have increased and are currently staying on a very high level. We’re at the point in the season where export is going pretty well. This is partly due to shortages in quantities in some countries, which creates space for our products. Growers have also decided to open their cold chambers which has increased availability.”
Demand for Polish apples is strong right now and prices could increase as the weeks go on, says Krawczyk. “Right now, there is high demand for apples in Spain, mostly for Golden varieties. However, countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium are still importing large quantities of Red Jonaprince and Jonagold and we think that that trend will continue until the end of the season. Prices rose a bit as was expected, and there will be still some increase in the prices soon, especially on varieties that will have lower stocks. Keep in mind that these are only our predictions, we can’t be sure what will happen in the next few weeks.”
Krawczyk hopes that the world will soon return to normal, with governments lifting the lockdowns and openings catering businesses again: “The biggest challenge will be to sell all the stocks that we have, as in Poland we do have quite large volumes in stocks. If we’re going to continue at the same level of sales as we’re seeing now, we should be able to empty our ULO chambers in July. Appolonia should have enough volumes of quality apples to supply all our customers until the end of the season. We are hoping that the pandemic will slow down, lockdowns will be lifted and governments will finally decide to open restaurants and hotels, which could help our economy. At the moment a lot of people suffer because of the Covid-restrictions and we all can’t wait for everything to return back to normal.” He concludes.
