New appreciation for Kyoto’s heirloom vegetables

Vegetables unique to the Kyoto area are often called Kyo-yasai. One factor that makes Kyo-yasai unique is their size. They are usually quite large. Many are much larger than their counterparts in other parts of the country.

But Kyoto is not the only place with its own unique vegetable category. Unique varieties can be found in almost every region of the United States. Osaka Prefecture has Naniwa vegetables, Tokyo has the Edo category, and its name is the capital.

Now, due to better branding, Kyoto vegetables are making a comeback. The prefectural government promoted about 20 varieties in the Tokyo metropolitan area and other areas under the name of "Kyoto Brand Products". When news spread about selling expensive Kungsai in Tokyo’s chic department stores, people returning to Kyoto began to notice respect for local products.
