UK wholesaler TG Fruits, based in the Brighton Wholesale Market, received the first load of new season California walnuts last night. The arrivals have been a bit delayed this year explains Tom Griffiths from the company.
“Normally we would have the first Californian walnuts in at the beginning of November - last year it was on 5th November. The delays have been down to the COVID pandemic and shortage of labour on both sides of the water.”
TG Fruits will supply the walnuts to small retailers and caterers in the run up to Christmas and beyond.
With the second lockdown in England lifting soon Tom is looking forward to supplying the catering trade again as it accounts for 45% of their business.
“This second lockdown was very different from the first, last time we were almost busier than normal supplying our retail customers as people shopped there instead of the big supermarkets. This time round the supermarkets were prepared with more delivery drivers.”
As well as walnuts, Tom said, they have some lovely Italian new potatoes in, various dried fruit such as apricots and raisins and of course Brussel sprouts on the stalk which are always popular at Christmas. Citrus from Spain is now in full swing and remains popular for its vitamin C content.
