The demand for PET clamshells has been picking up over the past few months. Some of it has to do with the coronavirus, as consumers prefer to have hygienic containers avoiding multiple touches from people. One manufacturer has increased production and now produces one million pieces per day.
Indian packaging manufacturer Santosh Packaging has been growing at a steady rate. According to Suhas Sethiya, Chairman of the company, their packaging is suited for a wide variety of products: “Santosh Packaging Pvt Ltd is a company dedicated to manufacture packaging solutions for produce growers. We manufacture PET Clamshells for grapes, stone fruits, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, plums, apricots, strawberries and many more products. We extrude multi-layer sheet at our own factory. The material used for our packaging is 100% recycled PET.”
In 2020, Santosh Packaging invested in new machines to increase their production capacity. Sethiya states they can now package one million pieces every day. “We started with a daily capacity of 0.3 million pieces a day. From 2016, we reached a capacity of 0.5 million pieces a day. From 2020, our capacity now is 1 million pieces a day! We have the largest capacity in India, and have a large network to supply 80% grape exporters. We are looking to expand further and become a one stop solution for clamshells in India, as we always say, it’s ‘Your product, Our packaging!”
“Our increase in capacity was achieved on two principles; quality and quantity. To ensure quality, we use Austrian sheet-line and German thermoforming machines, which are the best in the world. When it comes to quantity, we started with only a single machine. Later we increased it to two machines and after our last investment we’re now running on four machines.” Sethiya explains. “We supply Indian exporters with our packaging. We also export these containers to the US, Egypt and South Africa. Our facility is BRC recognized, and we also have EU and FDA certifications for our products.”
Although the coronavirus has brought many challenges with it, demand for PET packaging increased, which was positive for Santosh: “India is now noticing a change for products to be packed neatly in containers. This was also boosted with Covid-19. Consumers prefer to have hygienic containers avoiding multiple touches, and for this, the locking system stands out. Covid-19 has had a positive effect for us by sheer luck. The market has started to demand for packed products in clamshells and other products.” Sethiya concludes.
