Wimco Groenendaal, Groda AGF:

"Slightly better pear sales would be welcome"

The top fruit market is facing its share of uncertainties. That's according to Wimco Groenendaal of Groda AGF in the Netherlands. "This applies to both apples and pears. Sales aren't great at the moment. It's not so bad for the apples, because there are a lot less of them. We must, however, keep a close eye on their quality."

"With pears, several lines are going as expected. But, things are lagging slightly on other fronts. Sales of these great quality pears could be a little better. It's not that we're negative. But growers, in particular, have certain expectations. Those have to be met."

Lately, new varieties have been regularly introduced. Wimco's reaction to this is that most buyers probably aren't always waiting for these. "Shelf space isn't increasing. So these new varieties are introduced at the expense of existing varieties. That creates a displacement market. Nevertheless, the top fruit sector must continue to renew and innovate. The key lies in renewal and innovation under full chain management."

"We're an organic top fruit company. That market is growing slightly. I don't know if that's true in general. This year has, after all, been turbulent, with many opportunities and threats. The big question is what effect COVID-19 will have on our sector this year. I find that difficult to estimate at present. Most importantly, people should keep eating lots of fruit and vegetables. That's good for everyone," concludes Wimco.
