Eric Moerdijk, Monie:

"Limited supply of small Dutch red onions"

It's a little less hectic on the Dutch onion scene now. Exports are, however, continuing well. "There were some uncertainties at the start of the season. But, so far, exports have been good," says Monie's Eric Moerdijk. This is a Dutch onion sorting and packing company.

"The prospects toward the end of the year also look good. Senegal will be our guaranteed destination until December. I'm not saying we'll continue to export 35.000 to 40.000 tons per week. But it will still be good if we reach export weeks of between 25.000 and 30.000 tons."

According to Eric, finding enough onions isn't a problem. "The grower's price for direct delivery is €0,20. So, many farmers are willing to sell. That's always a kind of psychological boundary. There are plenty of good quality batches. That quality is, however, very variable this year. That will probably continue to be the case. With exports are they are, you can't use onions that need a lot of work."

"Currently, most of the smaller red onions have already been sold. It's difficult to find sufficient small-sized batches to fill the desired volumes. What would help is to change the specifications from 40-60 to 50-70. But, our clients would have to agree to that," Eric concludes.
