South Africa: Banana season delayed by four weeks

The cool spring has delayed the banana season in South Africa, while a storm in Mozambique has also reduced volumes.

Usually by September banana volumes pick up after winter, but this year it's only picking up now after some cold weeks in the banana production areas of northeastern South Africa and southern Mozambique.

At the Cape Town market the average banana price is now R200 (12.30 euros) to R220  (13.5 euros) for an 18kg carton.

The average national banana price on the markets is R9.77 per kilogram, but it is likely to come down as volumes increase.
