Excellent debut for the Salentine sweet potato

Patazù, the sweet potato with an extraordinary organoleptic profile and health benefits

"We grow and market a potato different from any other, not only because it belongs to a different vegetable family - the Convolvulaceae and not the Solanaceae - but also for its shape, color and above all for its extraordinary organoleptic profile and health benefits, which make it a real superfood. The Zuccherina del Salento potato is rich in antioxidant properties, fiber, potassium, protein, iron, calcium and vitamins (A-C-D-E-B1-B2 and B3), totally cholesterol-free and low-calorie.

This is what Vittorio Gervasi of Tenute Gervasi, a company from Melendugno (Lecce) made up of a team of young people who are passionate about the Salento area and its traditions, explained to FreshPlaza. After six years of research, they have revived and re-launched a local variety of sweet potato almost in danger of extinction.

"This product derives from natural farming, a philosophy that goes beyond the concept of organic, because our potatoes are grown with the total exclusion of synthetic chemistry. They are fertilized exclusively with earthworm humus, various plant macerates, nettle, horsetail and consolida, just to name a few. They are qualitatively healthy products, of extreme high-quality and of a size that ranges between 200 grams and 1.5 kg, with a shelf life of several months, if stored in a dry environment and not under direct light. These products meet the demands of an ever more demanding market in terms of food safety standards and authentic taste."

"The harvest began in early October and will continue until mid- November, thanks to staggered transplanting. On the commercial front results are impressive as well, with high sales orders, especially in the last few days. Tenuta Gervasi's potatoes are marketed under the brand Patazù La Patata Zuccherina del Salento. Our sales channels include not only the e-commerce platform, the Solidarity Purchasing Groups and stores, but moreover we are also building relationships with the large-scale retail trade. Being a first year, we are satisfied in all aspects. For the next campaign, we plan to triple the invested surfaces, so that we can fulfill more requests."
