Yex is getting ready for the start of the pomelo season. It usually begins in September and runs through to the end of February. This Dutch company is one of the largest players in this market. Yex has contributed significantly to this citrus fruit's popularity. That's among its Western European trading partners. This year, Yex expects continued growth. They introduced a pink pomelo five years ago. And buyers are purchasing more and more of these.

Yex has been importing their pomelo from China for years. The fruit is part of the Chinese culture. The annual moon feast is concluded by eating mooncakes and pomelo. This year, this festival will be held on 1 October. Yex sends most of its pomelos to Germany, Scandinavia, France, Austria, and the Czech Republic. Pomelos are considerably sweeter than grapefruit. That's true for the Pink Pomelo too. Yex has been supplying these since 2013. That's in addition to their Honey Pomelos.
Larger, more professional businesses
At Yex, Xian Huang sees to purchasing. "It's not only pomelo sales that are increasing, so is its cultivation in China. Companies there are getting larger and more professional. Growers there have been working according to GlobalGAP standards for some time now. They are also socially responsible." Xian visits their Chinese suppliers at least twice a season. That's to optimize these partnerships.
Color and flavor differences
The pomelo cycle lasts less than six months. But, there can be color and flavor differences, even within that relatively short time. For example, the fruit is more green than yellow during part of the season. The color has little effect on the flavor. That's, however, affected by other things. Like the amount of sunlight and water, the trees get in the orchard during the growing season. The pomelos harvested in September are, therefore, the tastiest. They are sold in the Netherlands in about October.
Recyclable plastic
The fruit continues ripening during transportation. The sea voyage takes four weeks. This time is important - the pomelos become sweeter and juicier underway. When they arrive in Poeldijk, the Netherlands, the pomelos are packaged in plastic. This increases this fruit's shelf life considerably. There's no good alternative for this plastic. But Yex has considered the environment. So, they buy packaging that's 100% recyclable. Yex wants to tempt consumers even more.
