The weight of trade shifts from online wholesale to e-commerce platforms

China: Production volume of red heart kiwi fruit from Shuicheng declined by 15%

Guizhou province is one of the major kiwifruit production areas in China. The kiwifruit has a long history of cultivation in Guizhou. Liupanshui city in Guizhou was elected the "Chinese hometown of wild kiwifruit" by the Chinese Association for the Protection of Wild Plants. Shuicheng county, a subordinate unit of Liupanshui city, is the main production area of kiwifruit in Guizhou. About two thirds of the surface area devoted to kiwifruit plantation in Guizhou is located in Shuicheng. The Shuicheng kiwifruit derives its characteristic flavor and product quality from the unique natural environment and weather conditions in Guizhou.

"The kiwifruit production season in Shuicheng begins every year in August and continues until the end of November. Extreme weather conditions affected kiwifruit plantations across China, and Shuicheng did not escape either. Dry weather affected the growth of Shuicheng kiwifruit in April. The production volume is estimated to have declined by at least 15% in comparison with last year." This is according to Mr. Li Zhihang, of the Shuicheng Hanxiang Farmers Cooperative for the Processing of Fruits and Vegetables.

"We have a plantation in Shuicheng that we manage in cooperation with local farmers. This kiwifruit plantation covers an area of 26 hectares. We produce read heart kiwifruit, which we mainly sell under our own brand 'Liangdu 19 Degrees' through traditional retail channels and e-commerce platforms. Our kiwifruit is sold in wholesale markets and supermarkets throughout the country. Considering the current pandemic, we have decided to shift our attention from wholesale trade to e-commerce platforms."

The Chinese fruit industry faces many challenges during this pandemic. The main problem is the reduced consumption power. According to Mr. Li Zhihang, "The price of Shuicheng kiwifruit dropped by 18% in comparison with last year. This development has us worried about the market prospects this year, but in the end the product quality of our kiwifruit will decide how well the kiwifruit sells. We continuously work hard to expand into new markets, and at the same time we strictly control product quality to maintain our market share. We hope to introduce our kiwifruit to consumers everywhere."
