Jorge Armando Celis, President of EMEX (Mexico):

"We are awaiting the signing of the protocol to be able to export our mangoes to China"

Mango exporting companies have continued to work and export their fruits, despite the pandemic. “We have worked in compliance with all safety protocols, ensuring the safety of our workers, and we have maintained our export rhythm, even though exports to the United States fell and it was very difficult to export to other markets, such as Europe, during the pandemic,” stated Jorge Armando Celis, the president of Mexico's Association of Mango Exporters (EMEX).

"This season we have had an extraordinary mango crop in Mexico with great quality, and we hope to close the campaign in an acceptable way despite the coronavirus," he added.

Challenges
The Mexican mango faces important challenges such as commercial diversification. "It is essential to diversify our shipments to international markets. Our sights are still on Japan, the European Union, Russia, and the Middle East," Celis stressed. "We are awaiting the signing of the protocol to be able to export our mangoes to China. It is a market that values quality and can be very interesting for our mangoes.”

Another important challenge for Mexico's mango sector is logistics. "We're about to start a 12-14 day express maritime route from Mexico to Europe, a Quality Inspection program at Origin and Destination (Packaging), the application of coatings that prevent the development of fungi and extend shelf life, and controlling the flow of refrigerated air in the containers during transit. Without a doubt, this will boost our exports to the old continent. This work is supported and backed by the good work being done by the United Producers of Mexico,” he said.

"We are creating and consolidating a brand image. In this sense, we are implementing the MANGO EMEX brand, which we are convinced will play a very important role in the coming years," the head of EMEX stated.

T-MEC and European Union-Mexico Agreements
According to Celis, "the trade agreements with the United States and Canada, as well as the one with the European Union, will strengthen and make our exports to the United States and Europe more competitive. They will undoubtedly enrich the internationalization of our mangoes in these two markets.”

Mexico's mango will play a very important role in the 'new normal' and, due to its great quality, it will continue to have a very prominent commercial hegemony in international markets around the world.
