There's been a clear increase in banana sales this year. "There was a significant peak in March and April. Considerably more bananas were being eaten. Since then, this peak has leveled off again. But sales are still up compared to previous years," says Hans Maagendans of Banafood in Germany.
According to this independent opener, bananas are profiting from their nutritional value. But prices are also relatively low. "Compared to, for example, a kg of apples, bananas are a cheap product. I can well imagine eating habits will change. People will fall back on cheaper, healthy food. That works to banana sales advantage."
"Fewer bananas are usually traded in July and August. Sales decrease significantly between weeks 30 and 34. This drop is smaller now, also because people are holidaying in their own countries. But firstly, the supply of other summer fruits is lagging. That makes it a little more difficult to plan what to bring in. But, for now, supply and demand are well balanced," concludes Hans.
