Foreign orders coming in for Victoria and Black Magic grapes

"We have harvested around 30% of the production so far, but the campaign will reach its peak as of next week. The first quantities of Victoria and Black Magic grapes were harvested in early July. Orders are coming in, especially from abroad," reports Antonio Cantatore, sales manager of Cantatore Antonio & Figlio S.r.l. in Ruvo di Puglia (Bari).

"Quantities increase day after day, and the fruit acquires a better color and Brix level. As for quality, these varieties have exceptional grades and organoleptic qualities, especially after the rain in May followed by a prolonged sunny period."

"The effects of Covid-19 have been affecting the commercialization of grapes as well. As for orders, we need to distinguish between domestic and European sales. The former have dropped by 40% compared to last year, as there are very few orders from the H&R sector. The main destinations in the north are the general markets in Mestre, Treviso, Padua, Turin and Verona, with prices ranging between €1.20 and €1.60/kg.

"Orders from abroad, especially from Germany and the Netherlands, have actually increased slightly. Quotations dropped by around €0.30/kg compared to 2019, but they have remained stable since early July (€1.30-2.00/kg). Everything seems to be going well so far, but we are wary of what will happen when production will be in full swing."
