Egypt is currently in between seasons when it comes to spring onions. After having a great season, one Egyptian exporter is already preparing for the new season, several months away. Their goal to find a suitable partner to work with in the United Kingdom has not yet been met, and this year they want to be ready in time.
The Egyptian spring onion season of 2019/2020 was good for Stars of Export, export manager Mai Yassin explains: “The previous season had soaring demand and a shortage on the market. Egypt had less production last year, due to the high temperatures we had to deal with. This year our production is predicted to be a lot more stable. Demand last year was through the roof, as when there is a shortage everyone naturally wants as much volume of the product as possible. Demand was especially high in the European market, which was great for us, as it’s our main market. However this season we can’t be sure what demand and supply will do for Egypt in general. We can be sure that as a company, we will have sufficient supply for all our customers and clients, thanks to increased production”
As many other growers do when a season has been very successful, acreage for cultivation has been increased. Yassin states that Stars of Export expects an increase in production as well. “We’ve increased our production by 30 per cent this year. This was mainly to cover all the orders that have come in since last year, when demand was very high and we were not able to cover all orders. For years we’ve had great relations and experience in the Dutch and German market, but this year we would really like to get a foothold in the United Kingdom. The one problem so far has been finding the right connection to work with, a client we can trust and appreciates the quality of spring onions that Stars of Export delivers. So we hope to find the right person for us this season. We’re looking forward to a good and productive season. The logistics of it all are looking good, although we’re not sure what the rates will end up being.”
When asked what will happen to her business if the Ethiopian dam goes in full operation, Yassin simply has not heard anything about the consequences yet. “As far as the dam in Ethiopia goes, we’re unsure what the results and consequences will be. We’ve not been told what the situation will be like, so there’s currently not much to share on this topic. Naturally we hope it will have a minimal effect on our business and more will become clear in the upcoming days.” She concludes.
