"New season Chinese fresh pears ready to ship to Brazil"

“Fresh pears from Hebei have just hit the market. Popular early varieties include Xinli No. 7, Crown, and Jewel. Affected by the frosty weather that occurred earlier on, the production of Crown pears in Hebei has been reduced by about 70%. The quality of Xinli No. 7 and Jewel are also slightly inferior compared with previous years,” Mr. Guo Zhongtao, Manager of Hebei Cangzhou Botou Dongfang Fruit Co., Ltd., shared insights on the market and export situation of fresh pears.

"This year’s production in Hebei is significantly lower. Due to the low production and marketed volume, prices have been up. Recent prices in the Chinese market have stayed at around 2.5-2.8 yuan per half a kilo, which are one yuan higher than the same period last year. However, as we are still in the early season and the marketed volume is limited, the prices that we see are not typical. We still need to wait for another 10 days until large volumes are available to see what is really going on,” Mr. Guo said.

“As a result of the climate, the price of various seasonal fruits is not high this season and the fruit market as a whole is slightly inferior to previous years. We have also received slightly fewer orders from overseas compared with the same period of last year. Our main markets are the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil. and other premium markets. In view of the high prices, we have also formulated a new sales plan and analyzed the market."

On January 14 this year, Hebei Cangzhou Botou Dongfang Fruit Co., Ltd. held a ceremony to mark the first Chinese fresh pears being exported to Brazil. The first exported volumes were almost sold out within two weeks after arriving in late March.

“Feedback from the Brazilian market showed high acceptance from local consumers. We initially planned to follow the first volumes with more exports, but with the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing difficulty in communication and logistics, we had to postpone the export plan."

"After the new crop became available, we have recently given a new quotation to Brazil, and can make shipment as soon as next week,” when talking about the development of market demand in Brazil in the future, Mr. Guo said. "The performance of overseas markets is yet not easy to predict, as it depends a lot on the control of the pandemic on the local level.”

Hebei Cangzhou Botou Dongfang Fruit Co., Ltd. has demonstration orchards of fresh pears of 1600mu and standardized orchards of 96,000mu. "To ensure the quality of exported products, we distribute pesticides, fertilizers, and protective bags to all of our growers, and require them to adhere to a standardized and large-scale green fruit production system. In addition to fresh pears, our main export products include winter jujubes and apples. With the development of the company and new markets, we will bring more varieties of fruits and vegetables to overseas customers."
