Cherries from British Columbia-based Jealous Fruits are the latest ripening cherries in the northern hemisphere. Gayle Krahn, the company’s Director of Horticulture, discusses upcoming harvest for a couple varieties in the video below.
She stands in an orchard right next to Okanagan Lake and explains the positive impact the lake has on the crop. “We experienced a sharp drop in temperatures in mid-January, but thanks to the proximity to the lake, we were able to sustain a beautiful crop. Due to the lake, the orchard is slightly warmer in winter and slightly cooler in summer,” she added. Overall, maturity of the fruit is delayed due to the cool spring and Jealous’ first day of harvest was this week, July 7. Harvest of the company’s very last variety, Sovereign, is not expected to start until mid-August.
