First container of Colombian avocados arrives at Mr. Avocado Ripening Center in China

The much-anticipated first shipping container of Colombian avocados arrived in Shanghai port on the 8th of July, 2020. The avocados passed through quarantine and inspection before they were transported to the Mr. Avocado Ripening Center. Colombia is the fifth country to obtain permission for avocado export to the Chinese market, after Mexico, Peru, Chile, and New Zealand.

The Colombian consul general in Shanghai, Ms. Luz Helena Echeverry Gudino, personally welcomed the arrival of the first Colombian avocados at the Mr. Avocado Ripening Center. She was accompanied by Ms. Liu Mosu, general manager of Mr. Avocado. Together they officially opened the first shipping container of Colombian avocados. They also placed a sticker that indicates these avocados meet the high product quality standards of Colombian avocados. Ms. Luz Helena Echeverry Gudino also tried one of the Colombian avocados at Mr. Avocado and officially thanked Mr. Avocado for the import of Colombian avocados, which will further stimulate the avocado industry in Colombia.

Ms. Liu Mosu, the general manager of Mr. Avocado, shared her experience with the press: "The product quality of these avocados is extremely high. We first transport these avocados to our avocado ripening center in Kunshan. This is to ensure that the avocados are ripe and ready for consumption by the time they arrive in the supermarket. Our avocado ripening center is different from the many banana ripening centers in the country. We use advanced technology imported from North America. Our equipment can guarantee a high level of product quality and outstanding flavor. This shipping container full of Colombian avocados will finish the ripening process and officially enter the retail market on the 12th of July."

"This first shipping container of Colombian avocados will be available in the Mr. Avocado stores, but our long term plans include close cooperation with supermarkets and other fresh fruit and vegetable chain stores. Although these are the first Colombian avocados on the Chinese market, their price will be regular and on the same level as other imported avocados."

When asked about the advantages of imported avocados from Colombia, Ms. Liu Mosu explained: "The Chilean avocado season ends just after Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020]. The product quality of Chilean avocados becomes unstable during the last phase of their supply season. Furthermore, around the same time, Peruvian avocados only just enter the market and their supply volume is limited. In other words, during this window, market demand for imported avocados exceeds market supply. That is why the import of Colombian avocados excellently complements a gap in the Chinese market."

"We expect a second shipping container full of Colombian avocados to follow the first one some time next week. After we assess market feedback, we will gradually increase our import volume." Mr. Avocado's ready-to-eat avocados entered the Chinese market in 2017. Now the company occupies 90% of the avocado retail market in China. Mr. Avocado will continue to import top-quality avocados from various countries around the world to provide Chinese consumers with ready-to-eat avocados throughout the year.
