There is not much pineapple circulating on the markets and prices are likely to go up. This is according to Alessandro Dal Bello, vice president of Sife. "We've gone through some really embarrassing moments, where prices were below cost. There was very nearly a 2-for-1 offer. Now, it seems that things in Europe are recovering. For instance, in the Netherlands the price of a single carton has increased by 2 euro in a very short time."

The reason behind this recovery also has to do to do with the fact that there is very little product left now. The production phase is currently reduced and this is linked to logistical problems, which are not completely fixed.
"If we look back and review the last couple of months - said Dal Bello - we can see that the pineapple has dropped dramatically during the lockdown due to the Covid-19 emergency.
What was the main reason for this trend? Pineapple is a fruit that Italian customers are used to to consume pronto, it is normally served in restaurants, ready to eat. The Ho.Re.Ca sector is the biggest sales channel for this product, more than 60% of this tropical fruit is sold through hotels, restaurants and bars."
With the Horeca industry closed, even the pineapple has collapsed. "This sector, together with its associated businesses, produces 15% of the national GDP and represents the sector that has suffered the greatest losses in economic terms, due to forced closure. Pineapple has become a turning point in the deep crisis of the Ho.Re.Ca sector, which needs guarantees and clear provisions for a full reopening."
