Chinese businesses handle single fruit categories facing difficulties

"This year, the fruit market as a whole is facing many difficulties and it is difficult to increase the price. Many companies are operating at a loss, especially those focusing on one category. However, at the same time, there is no shortage of outstanding high-quality fruit in the market whose sales have not decreased but rather increased,” Mr. Lin of Taiwan Nongyiyuan Co., Ltd. said.

“At the end of February, with the ease of the Covid-19 outbreak, factories began to resume operation. At that time, both the price of Taiwanese pineapples in mainland China and the purchasing power of consumers were roughly on par with the same period of previous years. In the following three months, the media of various countries reported that the global economy, including the Chinese economy, was facing a downturn, which has restrained the purchasing power of consumers."

“Compared with the end of February, the export price and the market price of Taiwanese pineapples in mainland China in April and May both fell by 10-25%, depending on the quality - higher the quality, smaller the reduction in price. Usually, April each year is a period with the best market when the price increases, but due to poor market conditions, prices didn’t improve this year.”
