Chicory becoming increasingly popular in China

"Chicory was introduced into China from the Netherlands more than ten years ago. Now, there are a few growers here. Compared with other vegetables, chicory is still a novelty product in the Chinese market, but fortunately, over the past few years its popularity among consumers has been increasing year by year, and it has a very promising future,” Mr. Liu Xiujun, chairman of Hebei Lianxing Jiayao Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. said.

"Since the introduction of chicory varieties from the Netherlands in 2014, our planted area has expanded to 600 mu. By growing them in a low-light environment, we have become the only company in China that produces and supplies this vegetable all year round. We grow them in a closed and low-light environment without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which guarantees the quality of our products.”

“Our sales volume is currently 15,000 kilos per month. Our main sales channel is wholesale for specialty food, which accounts for 70% of our production. Our products are mainly bound for hotels and foreign restaurants in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Shandong. 30% of our products are sold to high-end hotels and other high-end markets.”

"The Covid-19 pandemic that’s been ongoing since the Spring Festival has not affected the price of our products but has led to a decline in sales. This is mainly due to the closure of restaurants, but I am not worried about this, as the situation is getting better and the market is slowly recovering."
