Market promising

Tangerines from Peru available in China soon

“Grapefruit from South Africa is currently a popular item on the market. Their prices have dropped from 280 yuan/carton in May at the beginning of the season to the current 150-160/carton. The decline in prices is mainly due to the increasing volumes and the lack of notable advantages in quality,” says Wei Yuyou, General Manager of Yuehao Fruit, talking about the recent market situation of imported citrus.

“Following the grapefruit, tangerines from Peru will arrive to the market by the end of June. These tangerines are not very common in the Chinese market, and there are not many companies that handle them,” Wei said.

“Tangerines from Peru taste slightly sweet, with a sugar content of 14%-16%. Their production is large and the price is affordable. From the end of June to August, when the sales of American oranges come to an end and Egyptian oranges are in the early season with lower quality, these tangerines can effectively fill the market gaps when the citrus import volume is not big.”

“With the easing of Covid-19, restaurants and juice bars in China have gradually resumed business, and the consumption drive has picked up. We are very optimistic about the market of Peruvian tangerines this season, and we expect to sell around 200 containers this year,” Wei said.

“The Peruvian tangerines that we import are mainly of the brands of Camposol and San Miguel. We expect the price in early July to be around 120 yuan/carton (1X and 2X). Most imported items are sold to supermarket chains in North and Northwest China, with a small portion being marketed online. This year, we plan to expand our sales network and cover more regions."

When it comes to Chilean citrus, which has just gained access to China, Mr. Wei said, “Many companies are very concerned about the Chilean citrus that has just gained approved for export to China, especially with the Covid-19 pandemic, and are reluctant to take risks and be the first to venture out, but we are a pro-active company that is willing to be the first to introduce new fruit items into the Chinese market."

Yuehao Fruit was established in 2005 and has now grown into a fruit chain with 63 stores. "Since July 2019, we have maintained a lead in the volume of products imported from the west in Jiaxing Market. On top of wholesale, we also have forged partnerships with a number of Chinese supermarkets and e-commerce platforms to achieve high product turnover and premium pricing," Wei said.

In addition to citrus, Yuehao Fruit handles mainly blueberries, cherries, and other fruit from South America. It is worth mentioning that the company imported a total of 97 containers of South American blueberries last year. This year, they plan to increase the import volume to 120 containers.
