South Africa considerably increases its grapefruit exports to Europe

Early end of Spanish Verna lemon campaign

The Spanish Verna lemon campaign is now coming to an end and it is doing so earlier than usual. The high demand in recent months and the anticipation of the arrival of lemons from Argentina, South Africa and other overseas countries to Europe due to the so-called COVID-19 effect are the main factors determining this early end. The fact is that due to the pandemic, sales skyrocketed and the supply wasn't high enough to meet the demand.

At present, therefore, few operations are being carried out in the field and prices have been adjusted taking into account that overseas lemons are already taking over the European markets. According to Ailimpo, lemon prices at origin range from 0.50 to 0.60 Euro per kilo, with an average of 0.55 Euro per kilo.

According to this interprofessional organisation, Spanish Verna lemons will continue to seek their place in the European market during the month of June, with only quality items being appreciated and no interest in large sizes. Meanwhile, the activity in the processing industry at the end of this season remains normal.

Considerable increase of South African grapefruit exports to Europe
As far as grapefruit is concerned, the South African supply on the European market continues to increase.

Approximately 40% of the 14.6 million boxes that the African country had planned for this campaign have already been shipped. Almost 49% of South African exports are intended for European markets, and this year they have increased significantly compared to the previous one.

In these circumstances, the demand for Spanish grapefruit is low and prices continue to fall for all quality standards, although they are still above average. In the French market, the Corsican grapefruit season is coming to an end with stable prices.
