In the Netherlands, bananas were still selling very well in the infamous hoarding week. That was just after the anti-coronavirus measures were announced. That good market situation has, however, not continued in recent weeks. "One reason is that the Russian banana market was bad. Exporters, therefore, sent far more banana s to Northwestern Europe. That resulted in an oversupply in the market," says Robert Greeve of Anaco & Greeve in Poeldijk, the Netherlands.
"Prices are at a very low level for this time of year. But, they have been inching up again in recent weeks. They are, however, not yet at the desired level." Anaco & Greeve sells bananas to retailers, wholesalers, and a little to the foodservice sector. "Supermarkets are a small bonus, and wholesalers are lagging. The drop in sales to the foodservice sector was really dramatic."
"Fortunately, last week saw a slight upturn at foodservice clients. Summer is usually not the best time on the banana market. If there is sufficient supply of other summer fruit, sales will certainly not become any easier. But you never know; forecasting is guesswork. Logistical supplies are, in any case, not causing any problems," concludes Robert.
