"Eid al-Fitr celebrations stimulate Chinese pear export"

China is one of the world's largest pear producers and prices have recently shown significant fluctuations.

Mr. Wang of Jinan Haoyuan Agricultural Products Co., Ltd. has analysed the current conditions in China's pear export market: "The outbreak of COVID-19, shortly after Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020]. The price of pears suddenly increased back then. That is because traditional Chinese medicine values pears for their ability to moisten the lungs, suppress coughing, and produce saliva. Pears can help support the lungs. People who recovered from COVID-19 were interviewed on CCTV and some of them explained that in addition to taking medicine, they also ate pears to support the health of their lungs. When the outbreak of COVID-19 was gradually brought under control, the price of pears then began to fall again until it reached the same level as before the outbreak of COVID-19."

"The price of Chinese pears is not that high, which makes the pear attractive to overseas customers. Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are increasing Chinese pear import in the period leading up to the Muslim Festival of Eid al-Fitr (Breaking the Fast), which marks the end of Ramadan. The festival takes place on the eve of the 23rd of May and the day of the 24th of May. This is one of the major festivals in Islam, comparable to Chinese Spring Festival."

"Our pear export to Muslim countries in Southeast Asia increased quite a lot. We also supply pears to the Middle East and Africa, and we even supply a small volume of Chinese pears to the European market."

"We currently sell a great variety of pears, including the Huangjin pear, Xingao pear, Huangguan pear, Ya pear, Xiang pear, Gong pear, Nanshui pear, and Qiuyue pear. We have to provide a great variety of pears because we supply a great number of countries and clients in different markets have different requirements. We have had permanent staff with experience growing pears for many years and over time they specialize in different markets to understand the specific needs of individual clients. Our customers also learn to trust the expertise of our staff. Our company can guarantee a stable and specialized supply of various Chinese pears. We supply goods all the time and at the moment we have a healthy volume of orders."

"Pear production areas in Hebei, Shandong, and Shaanxi suffered from a cold current on the 23rd of April. We expect the price of pears to be rather high at the start of the harvest season this year. Some of traders with pears in refrigerated storage are hesitant to sell. They prepare to sell their pears over a longer period and time the moment they empty their warehouse completely with the start of the next harvest season. This will slow down and limit the downward trend of the pear price. Some prices are even rising, depending on the market and the pear variety, as is the case for 15 kg bags of 60# Huangguan pears. The overall price of Chinese pears is quite stable at the moment."

In addition to pears, Jinan Haoyuan also sells apples, tangerines, lemons, fresh ginger, and garlic. Regarding the ginger and garlic markets, manager Wang said: "The export conditions of fresh garlic and ginger are quite good this year. The price of fresh ginger is rather high, but trade has slowed down."

"The export of fresh fruit suffers from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wholesale markets in particular suffer from the pandemic. Exporters who supply overseas supermarkets receive very little impact, in some cases overseas clients even increased their import volume."

"While we continue to develop our current market share, we also hope to expand our export activities in the European market."
