What to consider when planning a new cherry orchard?

"The market determines the success of a cherry production, but a meticulous scientific study is also needed as it is not possible to rely on luck or chance. This is why we provide businesses with all the assistance they need when they contact us," reports Giovanni Zanzi from Vivai F.lli Zanzi.

"When planning a new cherry orchard, the rootstock is the first thing to choose after an accurate soil analysis. Choosing the right rootstock and variety depends on many factors including soil and climate conditions. An orchard in Puglia has different needs than one in Verona. This same reasoning applies to the whole world."

Cherries are not resistant to cracking, therefore research is focusing on the most tolerant varieties. "I believe new orchards should all be equipped with anti-rain nets. Climate change is so sudden that no risk should be taken."

As for the characteristics of the fruit, the market is increasingly demanding larger grades and cherries that are crunchy and good to eat. From an agronomic point of view, self-fertile varieties are popular in addition to those tolerant to cracking.

"Cherries can be grown all over Italy with excellent results. To obtain larger grades, one must not exceed in yields, we generally recommend around 15 tons per hectare. It would be possible to produce more, but at the risk of hindering quality and grade. An intensive orchard must reach the right compromise between good yields and optimized cost."

The perfect strategy should therefore promote innovation while respecting rootstocks and varieties. Producers and POs have the role of promoting the produce to the advantage of the entire chain. "We are here to help producers set up new orchards according to the most modern criteria."
