The Egyptian onion season has not really kicked off yet. "An early start from Egypt is not possible because the prices are still far too high. I also expect less demand for red onions this season, so we have no match," says Adriaan van Belzen of Daily Onions.
"Last season did not end well for many exporters in Egypt because we also saw high prices on paper that did not exist at all afterwards, so I hope that people now become a bit more careful in sending product without a fixed final destination."
"The situation looked very different in early in January. But the shortage of red onions does not seem to exist either, because we can still go ahead with Dutch and European red onions for the first three to four weeks. The demand from catering has disappeared and a large part of the red onions used to finds its way into catering. That's why I expect a difficult season for the import of red onions."
"As for the Dutch onions, we will move quietly through the season without spectacular movement up or down. Demand remains stable and supply is sufficient. But it has often been shown n the past that the surprise is in the tail," concludes Adriaan.
