Australians have gone back to basics, cooking at home with the family and this has increased the demand for sweet potatoes according to Allan Mahoney from Australian Sweet Potatoes.
“We had a ‘Christmas in March’ when everyone started to panic buy and for two weeks we saw an increase in sales of sweet potatoes three times the normal volumes, it settled down and is back to normal but still slightly up.”
“Harvest and packing has grown in volume as we look to place our sweet potatoes around the world. The changes we have seen in Australia have also taken place globally as buying habits have had to change with the closure of restaurants and food service taking a massive hit but if there is a positive, families are now eating at home and relearning cooking skills and flavours they may not done for ages.
“We watch what is happening globally very closely as sea freight seems to be immune so far if you plan ahead. Airfreight has virtually stopped which would hurt some commodities.”
