Sicural laboratory analyses its vitality and germinability

When it comes to kiwi fruit and frosts, it is essential to assess the quality of the pollen

To obtain kiwis of a good size and homogeneous production, quality pollen is needed. The recent frosts may have compromised the extent of the next flowering, as well as the vitality and germinability of the pollen.

Sicural can provide an accurate analysis of the characteristics of the pollen that will be used to support pollination.

Pollen granules

"The precondition for a successful pollination," explained Sicural's contact person Silvia Zuccherelli, "is to have high-quality pollen. Vitality and germinability are fundamental factors in evaluating the potential of pollen distributed in the field. By applying protocols established over time and expert knowledge, Sicural is able to evaluate the characteristics of the pollen to support pollination for the main tree crops, in particular Actinidia chinensis and deliciosa."

For some crops, including Actinidia, the use of supportive pollination is a common and natural approach. It is based on the distribution of pollen in dry or liquid dispersion.

With this practice, it is possible to increase and standardize the production and the size of the fruit, enhancing the hormonal stimuli that derive from natural fertilization. Phytopathological conditions (such as PSA bacteriosis), climatic conditions (such as recent frosts), or agronomic conditions (treatments), can limit the success of pollination and, therefore, the homogeneity of production.
