Mauricio Guevara, head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) of Honduras, stated that melon exports to China were being retained as a result of the problems caused by the coronavirus outbreak. The official acknowledged that an impact on the exports of this fruit would be unfortunate due to the strong production recorded in the country, where 12,000 hectares are cultivated annually.
According to a report from the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH), there has been a decrease in fruit exports to the Chinese market because the movement of inventory in that country has decreased.
In 2019, Honduran agricultural product exports amounted to 819.0 million dollars, i.e. 4.3 million more than in 2018, primarily because of the dynamism shown in melon and watermelon sales.
Shipments of these products registered an increase of $ 39.6 million, driven both by better international prices (42.3%) and higher quantities shipped (6.9%); totaling 115.6 million. The main destinations were the United States and the Netherlands.
