Ecuadorian producers and exporters form national red dragon fruit association

Fifteen producers and exporters of red dragon fruit in Ecuador have come together to form a national association called ASOPROPIEX. The purpose of the association is to provide the most outstanding exporting supply of red Pitahaya, by collectively producing fruit of exceptional quality at a very competitive price.

The association was established as an initiative to counterbalance the sharp fluctuations in price of red Pitahaya, by collectively sharing resources to ensure consistency in quality and availability of the fruit.

The members of the association are convinced that through collaboration with one another, they will be able to position the country among the main exporters of top quality Pitahaya.

The fruit is grown, picked and packed by locals, which not only generates incomes for all the families involved in the process but also assists in strengthening the financial structure of the communities where the fruit is produced.

The farms have been granted with both international and national certifications such as Global Gap and Good Agricultural Practices (Buenas Prácticas Agrícolas – BPA), which ensure the quality and safety of the product from planting to dispatch to final consumer.

ASOPROPIEX has 30 hectares of Pitahaya located in several settings along Manabí province. This means that their production benefits from an array of microclimates, which ensures availability of the fruit all through the year. It is however, from October to August, when they get the peak season of production; with “Greater harvest”, 10,000 + kilos a fortnight; and, “Minor harvest”, less than 10,000 every week.

The packaging features of their boxes are according to the requirements of their clients; being the 4.5 k boxes with 5-9 caliber, the ones their Association proposes.

ASOPROPIEX is embarked into achieving consistency in availability and exceptional quality of their fruit, with strong commitment to best environmental and sustainability practices.
