Tjerk Nagel, Konaxx Onions:

"Dutch growers are currently tougher than trade on the onion market"

In the weeks leading up to the end of 2019, large numbers of Dutch onions were being exported. Exports have, however, fallen considerably in recent weeks. "The borders closed early in Senegal. This has taken the pressure off the market. We are now missing large orders," says Tjerk Nagel of Konaxx Onions, This company is based in Sint Jacobiparochie in the Dutch province of Friesland.

"We are getting a lot of inquiries from all over the world for our onions. But, not enough is actually being sold. For example, Eastern Europe, the Far East, and the Caribbean are all on the market. They are, however, buying small amounts. I do think, considering the interest, demand might increase again."

"There is also a large discrepancy in quality between the batches that were harvested before and after the rains. Unfortunately, there are still onions from after the rain on the market. These should have already been cleared. These onions no longer meet the standards of the countries that are on the market now. Certainly not when it comes to color," Tjerk says.

"There was unrest on the red onion market. That did affect the yellow onions. Many packers bought in January. They had the last six months in mind. These packing companies are now lagging somewhat. This has resulted in this weak market. As a result, prices are under a little pressure. The growers are currently considerably tougher than the trade sector. Let us hope that we are in the calm before the storm at the moment," concludes Tjerk.
