In the 2018/2019 campaign, the average price of Egyptian strawberries in the European Union was almost double that of Spanish strawberries, which were also surpassed by the prices from other competing countries, such as Belgium, Holland, and Morocco, according to data of the Euroestacom statistical service (Icex-Eurostat).
Last season, Spain sold its strawberries in the EU at an average price of € 2,107/kg, meanwhile, the Egyptian strawberry was selling for €4,178/kg, the Belgian strawberry at €3,377/kg, the Dutch at €2,897/kg, and the Moroccan strawberry at €2,585/kg.
Of the ten largest strawberry supplier countries to the EU, Spain only exceeds Greece and Poland in price, € 1,284/kg and €1,614/kg, respectively.
In the last campaign, the EU purchased a total of 919.3 million kilos of strawberry for 2,165.56 million euro, and an average price of €2,355/kg.
Suppliers
56.04% of the strawberries consumed in community territory come from Spain, 11.46% from the Netherlands, and 6.94% from Belgium. Moroccan strawberries accounted for 3.57% of the total and Egyptian strawberries for 1.94% of the total volume purchased by the EU Member States.
Spain, the world's largest supplier of strawberries to the EU, sold a total of 515.14 million kilos in the community territory during the 2018/2019 campaign for 1,085.48 million euro, charging them at an average price of €2,107/kg, the lowest price of the four main strawberry suppliers to the EU.
The Netherlands, the second-largest strawberry supplier to the European Union, sold a volume of 105.36 million kilos of strawberries for 305.22 million euro and an average price of € 2,897/kg.
Belgium was the third-largest supplier of strawberries to the EU with 63.78 million kilos worth 215.36 million euro and an average price of €3,377/kg.
Germany ranked fourth with 61.72 million kilos, 158.53 million euro, and an average price of €2,568/kg.
Greece ranked fifth in the 2018/2019 campaign with a volume of 42.45 million kilos worth 54.49 million euro and an average price of €1.284/kg.
