"Cold climate weakens market demand for mandarins in China"

At this stage, China's mandarin production season is in full swing. Due to the impact of the climate, the overall output has decreased to a certain extent compared with previous years, which further affects the mandarin market, especially the export market.

Mr. Zeng Minhu from Shaanxi HoVo Import & Export Co., Ltd. shared his insights on the current operation of the mandarin market: “We've been sending out Mandarins for a while, but in recent weeks the demand is has been dropping . Now that the weather is becoming colder, fewer consumers are willing to eat a lot of fruits. So that also influences our export. For example, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, their demand is already decreasing. When it is 30 degrees people are more willing to buy fruits, but now temperatures are going down and thus demand as well. For now it will slow down a bit, but the circumstances will also improve later at the end of the season.”

“Our mandarin output is lower this year, mainly due to the drought this year. Currently the price for mandarins is stable, and the price is a bit higher compared to last year. About 0,2 yuan per catty, but overall the sales are slowing down this month. Not only the colder weather, but also the world economy plays a role in this. The world economy is also slowing down a bit and therefore people are not that willing to buy a lot. I expect that in February, the market will be a bit better again. As February is the end of the mandarin season, there will be less volumes, while the same demand remains. Therefore I expect that in this period the market conditions will improve a bit again.”

“We mainly sell to the Middle East and South Asia. Between these two areas there are also clear differences in requirements. For example, in the Middle East they prefer a bit bigger sized mandarins, while in South Asia they prefer the smaller sizes. Mostly because the smaller ones are a bit cheaper. In Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, they also prefer the mandarin to still have the green leaves on. If these leaves are on, they feel the mandarin is more fresh. So every country has its own habits and requirements for mandarins. We try to always reach our clients requirements, to give them the best service.”

“Currently we're supplying the fresh mandarins, they are not in cold storage yet. The fresh mandarins can be supplied until the end of January and then the cold storage supply will be sold. This year the cold storage is not so much, because of the decrease in output."
