Namibian and South African grapes sales are going much better than last year. This is according to Wibo van den Ende of Vita-Optima. This company is based in Bleiswijk, the Netherlands. "It is a much better season when it comes to quality.
"There are also much lower volumes than last year. Both Namibia and South Africa seem to have slightly fewer grapes than expected. The volumes from Peru and Brazil are far more program-related. There are less of these on the open market," Wibo says.
Prices are at around the €13,50 mark. That is a nice level. "Namibia is now practically empty. Larger volumes have only recently been available from South Africa. Promotions were planned for the last week of 2019. There will also be sales in week 1 and 2 of this year. These are for white and red grapes. These, of course, stimulate sales."
According to the trader, the trend towards less plastic is also clear to see in grape packaging. "Considerably more grapes are being ordered in top seal packs. Currently, we still send 40-50% in clamshell packs. Then, 30-40% are in top seal packs. The remainder is sold loose," concludes Wibo.
