"The domestic production season is coming to an end, but the import season has not yet begun"

"Temporary shortage of pomegranate supply in China"

There are great differences in the pomegranate market conditions. Although the price was relatively high at the beginning of the season, some fruits were harvested too early, and this affected the price development later in the season.

The production season is now coming to an end and the supply volume is limited. Mr. Xiao Bai Ge of Fruit Craft International recently talked about the pomegranate market conditions: "The reason that the price of pomegranates is relatively high at the moment is mainly because supply is temporarily limited. The domestic production season is coming to an end, but the import season has not yet begun. The pomegranates we sell are all high-quality pomegranates. The main difference with other pomegranate traders is that we use advanced technology such as refrigerated warehouses to keep the pomegranates fresh. At the same time, we also work on the designs of our packaging material."

"The pomegranate production season is coming to an end in production areas across the country. The limited volume of pomegranates still available on the market is often below quality standards. In addition, imported pomegranates have not yet arrived. Under the circumstances we are doing quite well. We have enough pomegranates in reserve to keep up supply for another month. Our target market includes both the high-end and the low-end markets, but pomegranates are mainly sold in high-end markets. The price of our pomegranates is also higher than that of pomegranates from other providers."

"The overall production volume was alright this year. The difference with last year was not great. Some pomegranate traders in Sichuan suffered heavy financial losses this year. The more they produce, the higher their losses. On the contrary, those who reduced their production volume and focused on product quality achieved better results. The average wholesale price of our pomegranates is more than 20 yuan [2.87 USD] per 0.5 kg. However, the sales figures of other fruits also impact on our market price. For example, cherries are currently in season and when their price suddenly drops, then this has an impact on other fruits as well. The price of cherries is quite low, just in time for Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020] when people give each other fruit as gifts. The flavor of the cherries is quite good and the price is reasonable."

"The main pomegranate production areas in Xinjiang are in Shufu, Kashgar, Shule, Yopurga, and Peyziwat. These Central Asian areas enjoy the warm and dry weather of the temperate continental zone. In this region the seasons are distinct and sunshine is abundant.

There are large differences in the average annual temperature and the difference between day and night is quite sharp as well. Rainfall is scarce and the water quickly evaporates. Summer temperatures are extreme, but this only lasts for a short period. There are no severe winters, but the temperatures remain low for a long period. The pomegranates in this area have a beautiful color. The cultivation of pomegranates in this area goes back more than 200 years. From our base in Guangzhou we trade with wholesale dealers in second-tier cities across the country. We are also exploring the commercial potential of online retail."
