Egyptian exporter Stars of Export on the spring onion season

“Thanks to investments made in the past, we are ready to expand our production”

The year for Egyptian spring onions was full of surprises, but was successful overall for one Egyptian exporter. Weather did pose some challenges, but thanks to investments made over the past few years they were able to handle whatever fate threw at them.

“We had some challenges thrown our way, but we have done some great investments to ensure quality over the past few years. This had more priority than increasing volumes, and I think we are able to reap the rewards from that decision now,” said Mai Yassin, export manager for Egyptian exporter Stars of Export. “The weather was the biggest challenge, it influenced the production in a negative way, as there were production shortages early on. Prices in Egypt have risen for the bunch. The weight was lower than usual, so the cost was slightly higher as well as the time required to handle the produce. It took some effort to satisfy all of our clients, but we managed to power through it.”

Thanks to the investments done in the past, Yassin feels Stars of Export is now ready to start increasing their volumes. “We have a very good base for our company. Our packing house is top notch, we have a great team to work with and so I feel we are ready to expand both our productions and our exports. Up until now we’ve only accepted a certain number of clients every season. We see some opportunities here as the result of the production shortages.”

Overall the year was pretty good for Stars of Export. “We sent good amounts to Europe and the United Kingdom in particular. Every market has its challenges and benefits and every year we learn more about the markets. However 2019 was a solid year for us.” Yassin concludes.
