The new harvest of French apples will arrive this month in Colombia under the “European Rendez-Vous: Apples from France, very…Crunchy!” campaign, an initiative of Interfel and the European Union to increase awareness about the quality of French fruits.
This year, many producing countries of the European Union were affected by the weather and obtained a lower production in the harvests. In fact, only Spain, Portugal, and France expect to have a satisfactory level in their fruit and vegetable productions. Without considering the potato, France produces about 7.8 million tons of fruits and vegetables a year, of which it exports 930,000 tons of fruits and 750,000 tons of vegetables. Apples account for 72% of French fruit exports.
According to a report on imports published in June of this year by Colombia's National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), France contributed the most to the growth of Colombian agricultural, food, beverage, fuel, and manufacturing imports, with 92.7%. Since apples are France's most exported fruit, the country wants to continue conquering the market by promoting this product through the European campaign. This is not the only fruit that will benefit from this initiative, which this year includes another star product from France; the kiwi.
The goals of this promotional campaign are to educate the consumer and professionals of the sector about the different varieties of apples, incorporate this fruit in Colombian cuisine, and strengthen trade relations between the two countries. This will allow the value of imports to grow, even more than last year when, according to DANE, the country's fruit and vegetable imports' cost, insurance, and freight reached 470.6 million dollars.
The French apple will arrive in the country in the coming weeks, differentiating itself in the market thanks to its quality, its production techniques, and great variety.
