Mike Looije, Yex:

"Pomegranate market slowly reviving, after quiet period"

There has not been much demand for pomegranates for a long while now. However, according to Yex's Product Manager, Mike Looije, demand is on the rise again. "There were many production countries on the market for a long time. It was, therefore, easy to find pomegranates. We are currently getting most of our product from Egypt. But, we could possibly get them from our Turkish growers too."

Yex co-worker, Nico Spruijt

"Countries like Egypt and Turkey can deliver from storage until March. However, the fruit's internal quality suffers, the later in the season it becomes. That is why we quickly switch to overseas produce. For example, pomegranates from India are available until the end of December. These are more expensive, but they are a lovely dark red. They are also highly sought after."

At Yex, pomegranates are becoming an increasingly large product group. "We have become a constant, year-round player thanks to our partnerships with our permanent growers. The overseas season, in particular, is really fierce. Especially when the Peruvian season gets going in March/April. This lasts until the summer."

"The Wonderful is always popular. However, there is much demand for the Bhagwa variety from India. Pomegranates fit in well on the Christmas menu too, In salads, but certainly as part of dessert too," concludes Mike.
