Jan Lathouwers, Lathouwers & Co:

"The supply of chicory will increase somewhat in the coming weeks"

The prices for chicory have been at a good level for weeks. “The demand for chicory is very good, but the supply is somewhat less. This has resulted in satisfying prices the past weeks, ”says Jan Lathouwers of Lathouwers & Co. "The lower supply is the result of the switch between old and new roots and I expect that supply will slowly increase again in the coming weeks."

 Jan Lathouwers

Lathouwers & Co has both hydroponic and soil chicory in it's range. “We see that ground chicory is still very popular in Belgium. Unfortunately, the number of chicory growers has been decreasing over the years, so we don't have enough chicory to export," says Jan. “Since September, the demand for chicory has increased considerably. The top selling period of chicory is during December and around the start of the New Year.

“The consumption of chicory has been fairly stable for years. Although chicory is traditionally seen as a winter vegetable, we notice that more and more chicory is consumed during the summer. We responded to this by offering pre-cooked chicory. This convenience product stimulates consumption by making chicory easier to prepare, "Jan. concludes.
