Tonda Francescana® hazelnut trees are now available at the nursery in Casalina di Deruta (Perugia) owned by Fondazione per l'Istruzione Agraria in Perugia.
"The new Tonda Francescana® hazelnut variety obtained by the University of Perugia crossing Tonda Romana and Tonda Giffoni obtained European patent rights (no.EU52157) on March 28th 2019."
The breeders of Tonda Francescana® are Agostino Tombesi, Daniela Farinelli and Mirco Boco. The variety is characterized by high production, early ripening (second half of August), high vigor and round fruits with a long shelf-life. Nurseries are now promoting the multiplication of plants to be planted in groves.
"Hazelnut groves should be considered as other orchards so, when production starts to drop, they should be renewed with new trees and new varieties. We need rational groves with suitable cultivars, proper management and irrigation systems," explains Farinelli.
The University of Perugia granted propagation rights to Fondazione per l'Istruzione Agraria in Perugia, which in turn obtained the maximum nursery certification for plants (national Qvi- Qualità vivaistica Italia certification). In 2019, it produced 100,000 plants for Italy and a similar number has already been delivered to clients abroad. As for next year, the Fondazione per l'Istruzione Agraria in Perugia nursery has planned the production of 200,000 plants.
