Mario de Goede, Dutoit Europe:

"Prospect of pineapple market more favorable after weak two months"

The pineapple market has gone through a weak two months. "In general we see a very quiet market in the import trade. All the import fruit suffered from it during this time. At the moment the pineapple is doing a bit better again. We expect a reasonable end of November with hopefully a good December month. Weeks 49/50, there must even be additional purchases made due to planned promotions", says Mario de Goede of Dutoit Europe.

"Prices are currently around 7- 7,50 euros for the small sizes and around 8 euros for the big sizes. The production in Costa Rica is not that big at the moment. But there is currently a good American market, and Russia is also picking up considerably. So, not so much fruit is sent to Europe", Mario notes.

"It is very difficult to make predictions in the pineapple market, but the circumstances are looking good. There will be less planting in Costa Rica and hopefully that will have an effect on the volumes for 2020. Furthermore, Costa Rica might export to China. All of this remains to be seen, but hopefully this will lead to fewer volumes in Europe after years of overproduction. That is also desperately needed, because it has been a challenge in recent years to run cost-plus! "
