"Off-season watermelons from Hainai enjoy a market advantage"

China is a country with a huge yearly watermelon production. Although the supply has decreased now that we are in the off-season, warmer areas such as Hainan are still in the production season.

Mr. Ma Lanqi of Hainan Runda Modern Agriculture Group Co., Ltd. said that their watermelons, marketed under the brand of “Meiyue ”, are available throughout the year, and they have entered the high-yield period last month. The sales prospects are promising, taking into account previous seasons.

“Our melons have also become available in October. Thanks to the special geographical conditions of Hainan, which is located at 18 degrees north of the equator, we have plenty of sunlight and thus a good market advantage. Our products are flying off the shelf. Although we are also considering export, we still cannot meet the demand of the Chinese market, which is our priority. But we will export our products in the future to let more consumers taste them.”

Watermelon growing process

“Sales last year were very good, so we decided to expand our planted area, which can be easily achieved as we grow our products in the greenhouse. Compared with last year, our production this year has doubled. The prices of our watermelons are set at two ranges based on different demands during different periods of the season, with October being the dividing line. Currently, the market price at the place of origin is about 10 yuan per half a kilo, but prices may vary due to the different transportation methods we use. We supply large supermarkets in China. For first-tier cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, we transport by air, so prices will be higher, but they are still acceptable to consumers. If the volumes are larger or if they need to be shipped to other cities, we use land transportation."

“In addition, most of our watermelons are sold by in the supermarkets. We have three different specifications, 0.9-1.1 kg, 0.75-0.9 kg, and 0.6-0.75 kg. Among them, the most popular are medium sizes, as watermelons of these sizes are just enough for one person to consume or to share. The quality and taste of this year's crops are also very good. In the past few weeks, we have seen big differences in temperatures, which is good for growing watermelons.”
