Which countries made the top 10?

Global ranking shows onion yields from 1962 - 2017

How have the various countries of the world's onion yields differ from one another throughout the years? In the video below, Data for Farmers displays the global onion yield ranking. It shows which countries played off against each other from 1962 to 2017.




The ranking is based on the onions average ton/hectare. This average is made up of the total amount of various kinds of field onions. This includes dry yellow, white, and red onions. Also included are seeds an onion bulbs.

The Netherlands at no. 1 in 2018
According to Data for Farmers, in 2018, onion exports came to a total of $3,5 billion. The Netherlands was the biggest onion export country in the world. In that year, this country exported onions to the value of $676,1 million. That is almost 20% of the worldwide total.

Why? Data for Farmers explains that there are many professional onion sorting and packaging plants in the Netherlands and there are excellent logistical conditions in that country too.

There is also easy access to the sea. This accessibility is thanks to the various large ports in the area. Finally, according to Data for Farmers, many Dutch growers cultivate high-quality onions.
