“Egypt and India filled the gap created by the Russian embargo”

The Egyptians are charmed by the Polish apples. They started importing the apples from Poland earlier this year, which was convenient. After the Russian embargo went into effect five years ago it was Egypt and India that became new markets and filled the gap this embargo created.

The Idared variety has sustained the most damages and losses this season, says Jan Nowakowski, CEO of Genesis Fresh. “The frost in May impacted most apples in Poland this year, but the varieties Idared, Ligol and Jonagored have shown the biggest loss per yield. These varieties will be much less compared to the average of the past five years. This is especially a big problem for Idareds, as these are in demand for Egyptian customers.”

The Egyptians have become a reliable market for the Polish, right after the Russian embargo went into effect five years ago. “Europe has enough apples this year. We export 70% of our apples to European countries, while 30% of the volume goes to Asian and African countries. This year, Egypt started importing apples earlier compared to last year, which is positive trend as they see our apples have good quality and are a tasty fruit.” Nowakowski explains.

The Russian embargo had a large impact on the Polish apple industry, Nowakowski says. “The entire industry changed already a lot over the past five years, after embargo from Russia came into effect. We follow the changing markets and demand for new varieties, packaging, deliveries and service to be done for those new destinations. Egypt and India are some of the new markets which came up after the ban for European markets. They replaced the gap for the export of Polish apples.”

Even though volumes are down, Genesis Fresh has made sure they have enough produce available to meet the demand of their existing clientele. “Our volume for the client is secured and will be able to fulfill the demand this season. New clients will have also our attention, as we feel we’ll be able to supply even more. The labor is sufficient this year, due to there being less fruit to be harvested. We are almost finished with picking the fruit and so the most labor will go to work in the warehouses and coldstores. For the coming season, we will need to look for more labor possibilities, not only from Ukraine but also other further destinations.”

Although Genesis Fresh will not have a stand in Madrid, they will attend the event and are open to meet up with interested parties. “We will be attending Fruit Attraction this year. You can reach us via phone or email to meet up. We will also be present during the show with our partner company Emerson in hall 7B, stand 10D, offering our clients Emerson real-time trackers for perishable products e.g. apples, blueberries, tomatoes, and many others. Please contact us to meet our team there.” Nowakowski concludes.
