The sales season of fresh pears is almost coming to an end. Hebei production areas enjoyed abundant harvests this year and the market conditions were good. Manager Ma Tao of Hebei Baifeng Agricultural Product Development shared his view on the Chinese pear market.
"Our company mainly produces and sells organic pears. The sales season of organic pears begins every year in July and continues until October. The packaged pears can be stored until May or June in the subsequent year. Pear production areas in Hebei did not encounter serious natural disasters this year. The weather conditions were quite good. The product quality is excellent. Last year the price increased because the production volume dropped. This year the price dropped by 30%-50% in comparison with last year because the production volume expanded. The current price for regular pears is around 3-4 yuan [0.42-0.56 USD] per 0.5 kg. The market price of organic pears, however, is around 7-11 yuan [0.99-1.55 USD] per 0.5 kg," according to manager Ma.
"Chinese consumers are not that aware of organic pears yet and the price is relatively high, so the domestic sales volume is relatively small. Most of our organic pears are sold on e-commerce platforms. As for export, we mainly export to the USA and Europe. The export volume this year is at the same level as last year." On the topic of the Sino-US trade war, manager explained, "the trade war has little impact on our business. People can still afford the custom tariffs on pears. When the price is right, importers will continue to order our pears."
In addition to organic pears, the main product sold by Baifeng Agricultural Product Development is organic pear juice. "We create organic pear juice by boiling the fresh pears to let the high temperature sterilize the juice, then we package the juice. We do not add any preservatives to our pear juice. This is the second year we've exported our pear juice. We expect to sell around 500 tons this year, which is a great improvement in comparison with last year. Our products are for sale on major e-commerce platforms and in Sam's Club stores. The price of 280 g of pear juice is 12 yuan [1.69 USD]."
Baifeng Agricultural Product Development owns an orchard in Hebei that covers 100 hectares. In addition to organic pears, the company also produces yams and processed yam products.
